Join us for film, food and fun. Sustainability endeavors are growing strong in our community.  In the High Country, we share a rich history of working together to ensure that our mountain region will forever be a wonderful place to call home.  The Homegrown Film Festival celebrates some of these efforts through a series of eight mini-documentaries, each spotlighting local people and organizations, including:

  • 350 Boone (climate change)
  • Appalachian Mountain Brewery (small business sustainability)
  • ASU Office of Sustainability (campus sustainability)
  • Biophilic Art Installation (sustainability art)
  • Blue Ridge Conservancy (land protection)
  • Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture (sustainable agriculture)
  • Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation (sustainable tourism)
  • National Committee for the New River (water protection)

This event is hosted by participants in the Sustainable Development course Outreach Skills for Sustainability, including students and instructor Laura England ([email protected]).  Click here for event website.

Thank you to event co-sponsor ASU Office of Sustainability as well as Tom Hansell of University Documentary Film Services for assisting the class in creating these mini-documentary films.

Thirty-seven programs did not receive funding under the current Farm Bill Extension, including programs that support organic research and production, farmers markets, beginning farmers and rural communities. Jared Cates, Community Mobilizer for the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association, will provide an introduction to the farm bill and its history, and an explanation of the current extension. You will hear how the current funding cuts are affecting real people – farmers, researchers and communities – throughout the Carolinas and in your region. There will also be time for questions.

Jared Cates is a recent graduate of the School of Social Work at UNC-Chapel Hill and also attended Appalachian State University where he earned bachelors degrees in both Political Science and Spanish. While he did not grow up on a farm, Jared’s family kept a large active garden. His father was a long-time chef and natural, organic foods was always a top priority in the Cates household. These days he enjoys spending time in his large urban organic garden in Durham, NC and is excited to soon be caring for his own small flock of layer chickens. (http://www.carolinafarmstewards.org/)

Call for Applications: 2013 High Country Farm Tour

3/18/2013

Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture (BRWIA) is now accepting farmer applications for the 2013 High Country Farm Tour. The tour will feature Watauga, Ashe, and Caldwell County farms on August 3 and 4 from 2:00-6:00 pm. Deadline for applications is Wednesday, April 10.

“This is a great opportunity for new and well established farms to make life-long customers, share their story, and educate about their land and growing practices,” said Courtney Baines, BRWIA Director of Programs.

While the tour provides opportunities for consumers to see where their food comes from, its primary purpose is to increase farm revenue by providing an outlet for on-farm sales and helping farmers expand their customer base. Farmers who participate in the farm tour also receive a one-year complimentary Carolina Farm Stewardship Association (CFSA) membership.

Last year, the High Country Farm Tour featured 22 participating farms in Ashe, Watauga, and Caldwell counties and attracted more than 500 farm visitors.

This year, BRWIA plans to build upon last year’s success by increasing advertising and programming. Participating farmers will be encouraged to attend the workshop, “Making the Most of the Farm Tour,” designed to boost on-farm sales, secure long-term customers and develop marketing tools.

Interested farmers should apply on-line at http://farmtour.brwia.org or contact Courtney Baines [email protected] with questions.
