BRWIA's Legacy Fund SHero Shout Out: Betty Douglas Gordon

5/15/2019

“My mom, Betty, was a joy to all. She loved life and lived it fully every day. She gave of herself to others as a volunteer, in her church, in Eastern Star, in Cub Scouts, to the American Cancer Society and to many others. She always put others ahead of herself and never looked to be recognized. She led by example, and many young people were touched by her over the years. The world is a better place because of her and she lives today in the many people who knew her. She is truly missed!”
-Freda Smith

BRWIA's Legacy Fund SHero Shout Out: Shannon Carroll

"Shannon is such a joy each week when I pick up my order from the food hub. She knows me by name, greets me, and makes sure my order is correct. Her smile is contagious and makes my day. To me, going to the food hub is like a kid going to see Santa Clause - such a treat - the best part of my week-I can't wait to see what my order is going to look like - the lettuces, herbs - the freshness of it all . . .
It is also a delight when I order something from the hub that I haven't ordered before - it is so much fun to see what it is going to be like, taste, smell, etc.
Shannon embodies the spirit of women in agriculture - I joined the group also because of a woman who approached me to join the group when I picked up my order.”
-Mary Ferrel

BRWIA's Legacy Fund SHero Shout Out: Laura Oates Smith

"I am donating to BRWIA in honor of my mother, Laura Oates Smith. She grew up on a farm in eastern North Carolina before and during the Great Depression, lacking in material things but not for food. One of 11 children, she became the first person in her family, male or female, to graduate from college. She became a school teacher and touched the lives of many young people.

When she married my father, a Naval officer (and a Yankee from Ohio), she had to transform herself from a country farm girl into a military officer’s wife and attend official functions, parties and ceremonies, as well as try to be accepted by her in-laws from a drastically different culture and background. She lived around the country and overseas, moving and having to make new friends constantly while raising three children with her husband away on duty for weeks at a time.

Throughout her life, she faced her many challenges with grace, compassion, an abiding curiosity, enduring kindness to everyone she met, and great pride in her roots and where she had come from.

It would have given her great joy to know that life has come full circle for her family in that her grandson is now a farmer in the High Country, carrying on her legacy of great things arising from the dirt."

-Tim Smith

BRWIA's Legacy Fund SHero Shout Out: Sarah Peedin Rose

5/9/2019

"My mother, Sarah, grew up on a small farm in Eastern, NC.  As a child, I played there, amazed at the vegetable gardens, pigs, cows and fresh food.  Her grandmother, Janie, farmed that same land, SOLO, after her husband died when she was in her 20’s.  Both women had deep roots in the soil of Eastern NC. Those same roots remain deep in my soul here in Western, NC.  My gardens are my joy!"

"My mother, Ellen Powell, taught me about the land through urban gardens and her own rural, homestead upbringing."
-Dana Powell
